Garden wildlife is fun and interesting, if you want to join in the world’s largest wildlife survey get involved in the Big Garden Birdwatch over the weekend of 26-27 January 2013. All you need to do is sit in your garden for an hour, count the birds and then feedback to the RSPB on what you see.

We love a good challenge and have decided to try and attract as many birds to our gardens as we can in advance of the big day (without attracting vermin!). If you want to join in and want a varied selection of birds in your garden it is easy to do and doesn’t take too much time or effort and more importantly can be done on a budget.

Tips for attracting birds

• Hedgerows attract nesting birds
• Thistle and Hawthorne attract different wildlife and provide food
• Birds need water, create somewhere for them to bathe and drink (keep this ice free by placing a ping pong ball in the water))
• Off the ground bird feeders are the best for birds (harder for predators and squirrels to get to)
• Vary your feed, use pastry, mild cheese, fat balls, bird seed, peanuts, banana, apples, dried meal worm
• Keep your feeding station clean, pour hot water over it now and again to keep it clean and vermin free
