Everyone knows that a summer glow makes you feel confident, sexy and healthy. However getting a natural tan in the UK in December would be near impossible and the UV of sun beds can cause skin damage so it’s not for everyone. So how do you get that sun kissed look and without breaking the bank?
You can opt for the salon tan, which is done professionally at a salon or a spa and can range from air brush tans to full body exfoliation and self tan applications. This can often be an expensive treatment so it pays to shop around. There are a number of sites which offer instant discounts such as Groupon, we had a search around and full body spray tan can be found from £9.50.
If you really want to fake a summer tan and apply a self tanner yourself then you will need to follow some basic rules to get that even great looking result without patches, streaks and orange hands!
- Allowing your pores to close before self tanning is a must so remember to wax up to 48 hours before and shave and exfoliate at least 24 hours before this will prevent little dots where the tan gathers in the pores, if you take a shower before you apply the tan, leave a few hours for your body too cool down and the pores to close.
- Moisturising all over before tanning can cause discolouration of the skin tone, the exception is the extremely dry areas of the body such as knees, elbows, ankles and feet. Self tan can pool in dry areas and become darker than the rest of your body so moisturising these dry areas this will help develop a more even tan. After you have your tan it is recommended that you moisturise fully after each shower/bath to help prolong the tan and exfoliate three days after to help begin to remove the tan evenly.
- Wearing gloves will stop your hands becoming orange, you can use latex gloves, plastic gloves or a mitt, if you do use your bare hands then add some thick moisturiser and leave it till it’s dry before applying; do not forget to wash your hands afterwards!
To tan your face you can build a tan by using make-up and bronzing powders, if you have to use self tanner you can buy moisturising tanners that gradually build up to get a more even natural tan, and then apply the bronzer/ make-up after. Using a self tanner for the body on the face can take patience and practice and you should always avoid the eyes!
